Quem Somos
O SemIA é um grupo de pesquisa vinculado à ECA-USP, dedicado ao estudo das relações entre Comunicação, Semiótica e Inteligência Artificial.
SemIA is a research group affiliated with ECA-USP, dedicated to the study of the intersections between Communication, Semiotics, and Artificial Intelligence.

From SemioData to SemIA
Founded in 2018 as SemioData, the group’s original mission was to investigate the relationships between Charles S. Peirce’s semiotics and emerging digital technologies.
With the advancement of Large Language Models, the group expanded its scope and rebranded as SemIA in 2023, reflecting its focus on the intersections between semiotics and Artificial Intelligence.
Today, it brings together researchers from various Brazilian institutions and maintains international partnerships, establishing itself as a leading reference in the field.
Coordination: Vinicius Romanini

Associate Professor at ECA-USP, he has coordinated the group since its founding. He holds a PhD in Communication Sciences from the University of São Paulo, with a research focus on Peircean Semiotics.
Theoretical Framework
Our approach is grounded in the semiotic theory of Charles S. Peirce, the American philosopher and scientist regarded as the founder of modern semiotics. Peircean semiotics provides a robust theoretical framework for analyzing sign and cognitive processes, enabling a deeper understanding of contemporary communication phenomena.
Objectives
- To investigate contemporary communication phenomena from a semiotic perspective.
- To analyze and model cognitive processes based on Peircean semiotics.
- To study the formal and mathematical aspects of semiotics.
- To evaluate the impact of AI on communication research and production.
- To develop analyses of AI through the lens of edusemiotics.
